Oh no, you’ve lost the key fob to your car.
What to do, call a locksmith, maybe Northeastern Security? Or maybe you’d like to save some money and do it yourself. This may help you decide.
Some models of Saab, BMW, Volvo, Toyota and Lexus, Subaru, Isuzu, VW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz cars are fairly complicated when it comes to generating a. Many people simply buy a new one from a dealer – if you’d had this experience, you know it’s quite costly.
Here is some basic information that could help you decide how to proceed, assuming you’d consider “doing it yourself.” The short version is this: you have to locate and remove the vehicle’s immobilizer module, bring it to Northeastern Security on Mineral Spring Avenue in Pawtucket, let them generate a new fob using EPROM technology, and then re-install the immobilizer module in your car.
Immobilizer modules come in many sizes and shapes; the photo below shows four examples. Some are on the steering column, some behind the dashboard. You obviously want to remove the stem module very carefully.
Immobilizer Modules include an EPROM chip, which contains the information about the unique key codes for your vehicle. To duplicate the vehicle’s key, you need access to software that can read that code. For most of the brands listed above, you will find that Northeastern Security, to the best of our knowledge, is the only that can work with this data. If you have a Toyota, you can call around; OR, if you find the above too daunting (and the prospect of deploying your airbag terrifying), call Northeastern Security. In the photos below, César has removed a module from a Saab; he’ll bring it back to the shop, generate the new key using the EPROM technology, and then re-install it the module.
